Department of Respiratory Therapy Program

With technologic and scientific advances that have impacted the health care industry, the traditional practices of respiratory therapy through on the job training are no more acceptable as an educational pathway for a respiratory therapist (RT). A package of scientific, technical and applied skills is a fundamental requirement for practice. RT’s are now indispensable elements in the health care team. The main objective of the RT program is to provide students with fundamental knowledge and skills to perform safe and affective respiratory care that conform to ethical standards of health care. The curriculum is designed to promote personal and professional growth of the candidate. It is divided into three structured components: basic and social sciences, professional – theoretical concepts, scientific methodology and practical clinical experience. The RTs will be prepared to perform their tasks at a competent level with a sound base of knowledge to evaluate and make appropriate decisions. Candidates are also taught to maintain highest practice and ethical standards and encouraged for on going learning by conducting research to advance the quality of RT care.

At the end of the program, the student will be able to:

  1. Apply methods and techniques of patient assessment.
  2. Apply and monitor emergency and chronic airway management.
  3. Acquire skills in application and monitoring of oxygen and specialized gas mixtures.
  4. Perform and interpret gas analysis and associated clinical cardiopulmonary physiology determinations.
  5. Apply and monitor lung expansion modalities, chest physical therapy and chest drainage techniques
  6. Implement and monitor cardiopulmonary rehabilitation programs.
  7. Perform and monitor invasive and non invasive mechanical ventilation devices.
  8. Implement advance resuscitation modalities and special procedures to adult, pediatric and neonatal patients.
  9. Apply critical thinking to cardiopulmonary monitoring and diagnostic testing.
  10. Participate in the implementation and evaluation of research activities.
